MOHJA KAHF was born in Damascus, Syria. She grew up in Indiana and New Jersey, and she has lived in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates and traveled in Jordan. She lives with her husband and three children in Fayetteville, Ark. where she and her husband teach in the Middle East and Islamic Studies Program at the University of Arkansas.
Kahf’s scholarly work includes nonfiction writing on women in Islam. Her poems have been published in literary magazines and journals such as Azizah, Ruah, Banipal, The Paris Review, The Paterson Review, and The Atlanta Review among others.
Kahf’s books include Western Representations of the Muslim Woman: From Termagant to Odalisque (University of Texas, 1999), Emails from Scheherazad (University Press of Florida, 2004), and The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf (Caroll & Graf/Avalon Books, 2006).
